UDC opens new tennis courts to the public with three-month pilot program | Forest Hills Connection |

UDC has brand new tennis courts thanks to a $ 2.3 million renovation that took months. Members of the SVP’s women’s and men’s tennis teams have spent the last three weeks running them in, following a groundbreaking ceremony on August 21 (see photos below). And now, the university is opening the courts to players in the community, thanks to memberships in its Firebirds Tennis Club.

UDC starts with a three-month pilot program. During this time, community members can join the Firebird Tennis Club for free.

Hours of public availability have not been specified, and membership fees for the pilot’s suite have not yet been determined. But the public will have the opportunity to learn more at UDC tennis open day this Friday September 10 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

SVP Director of Athletics Patricia Thomas said people can purchase memberships during the open house at the tennis courts, which are accessible from Yuma Street and Windom Place NW. The UDC has also updated its tennis court information page with a link to an online registration form.

John Young, a Wakefield resident who has led an effort to regain public access to SVP tennis courts, hopes people give it a try. “In order to get the community access that the community needs,” said Young, “they will need to sign up for the pilot program, use the courts and provide feedback on how the tennis program should be administered. in the future.”

Young engaged SVP President Ronald Mason, Board Member Mary Cheh and ANC 3F on the issue, and organized an online petition in the fall of 2020. They are confident the SVP will achieve a system that works for everyone.
