The Sulfur Springs tennis courts have been among the best in all of East Texas for quite some time now. Even larger schools like Highland Park, Plano West and Allen have all chosen to play their playoff games here.
Recently they have become even more attractive, after resurfacing. The newly refurbished courts (as seen above) look brand new and will be an even greater attraction for players and teams wishing to play on the finest courts available.
“It was already one of the best places in East Texas,” Sulfur Springs head tennis coach Tony Martinez said. “Some of the top schools in Texas just want to play their playoff games here, so that’s part of the beauty.”
This weekend, the new courts will see some action, as they host a Universal Tennis Rating doubles tournament on Friday. The adult portion of the doubles tournament will be paid for, with a total of $300 in prizes up for grabs.
Several teams have already been formed, made up of both local players, as well as players from the metroplex. The adult division is both men’s and women’s, with teams able to use any combination of men and/or women.
There will also be a secondary division as well as a junior secondary division, giving players of all ages the chance to show off their skills. Martinez also mentioned how the sport is growing in the region, with even younger players starting to show interest and improve their skills.
“Tennis has grown here, our camps have grown,” Martinez said. “We had almost 80 children in our camp, compared to 10 to 12 children when I started. We have more and more each year. »
“We try to have more of a year-round program for young children.”
Come Friday night to see the newly refurbished courts, as well as see talented players from all age groups in the tournament.
