Clevedon Lions Club

Clevedon Loins Club established in 1968  is part of the Lions Clubs International Foundation that provides world wide financial assistance in areas of need. While a great deal of Club activities concentrate on the needs of the this community there are many humanitarian projects in the UK and across the globe where Lions also provide assistance. The following three paragraphs depict just some of these.

The "Message  in a Bottle" project is a simple but highly effective idea whereby  householders, particularly the elderly and infirm, can place their medical  details, emergency contact numbers and other information in an easily  identifiable plastic bottle. This is placed in the fridge for safekeeping and  a readily identifiable sign, [a first aid cross sticker,] is placed near the  front door directing helpers to the bottle. This can be invaluable in  emergency situations when the individual may not be able to convey such life  saving information. Lions Clubs in the South West and in many towns throughout  the UK are participating in this scheme. Bottles can be obtained free from  chemists and pharmacies.

Lions Clubs all over the world have for many years been  supporting an International project  "Sight  First" which is enabling sight impaired people in Africa, Asia and  the Indian sub continent to have sight restoring surgery at cataract and  glaucoma camps. In the remoter areas of developing countries Eye Hospitals are  being built to provide eye care on a more permanent basis. To date more than  three million people have received sight restoring surgery.

"Water Aid" is  yet another International project where in some third world countries, access  to safe water is estimated to be just 47% in rural areas, with more than half  the population only having access to potentially contaminated water. A typical  Water Aid project helps villagers to dig water wells to access safe ground  water and dig latrines for hygenic waste disposal. Over the last few years  more than 50,000 of Ghana's poorest people gained access to clean water by  this means.

In the past twelve months Clevedon Lions with the excellent help of the Lions Ladies Group have supported: The Royal British Legion, SSAFA, Clevedon ATC and ACF groups, Portishead Lifeboat Trust, the Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre in Nailsea, Clevedon Cottage Hospital, a school for under priviledged children in Lima, Peru, Clevedon Roundabouts Playgroup Centre, the Cystic Fibrosis Unit in Bristol Children's Hospital and Motivation, a charity that builds vehicular aids for handicapped people in the third world. Smaller donations have been made to help local people and causes referred to our Welfare Committee.  Every month we host an evening for twenty or so partially sighted guests at The Hawthorns Hotel and at Christmas each year, hold a Disco for children with learning difficulties.

Funds are primarily raised via Clevedon's annual Summer Festival and Father Christmas Float both extremely well supported by the Town Council, Clevedon Garages, the local media and Clevedon citizens and also our Bacon Butty and tea stall at Clevedon's Farmers Market each month. Clevedon Lions are extremely grateful for this ongoing support. Every penny, raised and donated, is used to support charitable causes. Lions Club members fund the Club's administration costs directly.
